Workshop and Advanced Course on

Deterministic and Stochastic Modeling in Computational Neuroscience and Other Biological Topics

Dates:   May 11 to 15, 2009

Place:   Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), Bellaterra, Barcelona, Spain
How to reach the CRM

The Advanced Course and the Workshop will mainly turn around stochastic differential equations in biology, with a slight bias to neuroscience. The four series of lectures are thought of as an introduction to modeling, simulation and analysis in the different biological areas of this research programme. A major goal is to visualize the mathematical transversality across biology; that is, to see how similar mathematical tools apply to different biological problems.

Strengthening interactions among researchers in different biological areas is one of the goals of the Workshop, in which specialists on the field are invited to guide a session consisting of a lecture about some hot topic of his/her preference, followed by a discussion with the audience after each session. This format is intended for stimulating the discussion among participants and promote collaborations. Proposals for workshop sessions are encouraged, including also topics on differential equations (both stochastic and deterministic) that could eventually be applied to one of the branches of this research programme: computational neuroscience, tumour growth and cancer modeling, population dynamics and adaptive dynamics.

The four courses will take place on May 11th and May 12th, 2009, whereas the period from May 13th to May 15th will be devoted to the workshop. Students from master/doctorate programmes on applied mathematics, physics, bioengineering and biology are especially encouraged to participate.

Registration and Financial Support

The CRM offers a limited number of grants covering registration and accommodation addressed to young researchers. Applications can be submitted during the registration process. The on-line registration system enables the following actions:

  • Register to the activity.
  • Apply for financial support. (Applicants will be asked, among other things, to upload a curriculum vitae. Please note that no applications will be taken into consideration otherwise.)
  • Pay the registration fee.

Deadline for grant applications: February 13, 2009

Deadline for registration and payment:     April 11, 2009

Registration fee: 250 Euros, including participation to the lectures, documentation package, a copy of the course notes, lunch tickets, a social dinner, a cultural activity, and coffee breaks.

Accommodation

Participants awarded with accommodation grants will have their lodging arranged through the organisation. The remaining participants are encouraged to book their lodging as soon as possible.
